2008 Holiday - Report
On Saturday 30th August 2008 we returned from a very successful holiday where we provided 40 very deserving children with a 6 day adventure holiday during which they had the chance to try a wide variety of new activities. The children were all referred by Social Services. Close liaison with social services backed up by many supportive phone calls from our volunteers to the parents ensured all 40 children invited attended the holiday. Parents/Guardians are often worried about their children going away form home, perhaps for the first time. We were able to provide reassurance that our 33+ years of experience means we have the expertise to ensure the children are well looked after.
Location and Activities
Our sports coaching project aims to provide weekend coaching for children and also the support structure to get those that what to involved in local teams. We help by identifying possible teams, paying subs and where required buying basic equipment.
Benefit to the Children
Our volunteers working with the PGL instructors were able to encourage all of the children to achieve as much as possible from each activity. We had the pleasure of seeing many of the children blossom during the week, buoyed by the pride at what they achieved each day.
More recently we have been providing more adventurous activities, which have enabled the children to try new experiences and really challenge themselves. In 2008 we took 40 children to an adventure centre on the Isle of Wight where they were able to try abseiling, dragon boat racing, climbing and a whole lot more.
All our holidays give the children a chance to experience living in the great outdoors. Many of the children we help do not get the opportunity to visit the countryside very often and it is great that through our holidays they can start to appreciate its beauty.
Here are some of the children's achievements:
- First time on a ferry (Red Funnel Southampton - Cowes)
- First time on a small boat (Dragon Boats)
- First time in a harness (abseiling and other activities involving climbing)
- First time driving a quad bike
- First time on a beach walk
- First time staying away from home
- First time getting further than the steps into a swimming pool
- First time at a camp fire singing songs and toasting marshmallows
